Our first experience with Wizard Games’ Megaways series, Rumble Rhino Megaways, left us unimpressed. However, they have greatly improved in their second dynamic reels release, Dragons of the North Megaways. Drawing from the dragon-centric fantasy theme of the original Dragons of the North, this game offers a dynamic grid with up to 117,649 ways to win. The gameplay is enhanced by several new modifiers in the top Dragon Bonus Reel, though jackpots are no longer available. Prizes of up to 1,000x are possible, with respins featuring increasing win ways. While the bonus round doesn’t offer any extras, modifiers seem to trigger more often.
The game also includes premium dragon symbols in four different colors, which pay between 2 and 10 times your stake for six-of-a-kind wins. Regular wilds can appear anywhere to substitute for pay symbols, and pay the same as the top-tier red dragon. Winning symbols are removed via a Cascading mechanic, allowing for potentially endless additional wins per spin.
The Dragon Bonus Reel, at the top of the grid, contains one bonus position per reel. Landing a special Golden Dragon Egg symbol activates the bonus symbol in the top position on the same reel, and serves as a wild symbol. The Mega Wilds feature can be triggered at any stage, awarding full reel wilds with multipliers up to x7. The Bonus Round is similar to the base game and can be purchased for 100x the total stake.
While we didn’t experience anything exciting in the base game, the feature provided more lengthy cascades and frequent egg drops, resulting in significant wins. We recommend using the turbo setting for a faster pace.
Dragons of the North Megaways is a significant improvement over Wizard Games’ debut, both visually and in terms of potential winnings. The dragon bonus reel is a unique feature that adds depth to the gameplay. Although a progressive multiplier in the bonus round would be appreciated, the frequent egg drops and eventful bonus round make up for it. The default potential of 18,648x is decent, though it may vary with different RTP settings.
As for other dragon-themed games, Dragons of the North and Dragons Clusterbuster are popular choices. Both offer potential cash prizes and bonus rounds. Dragon’s Cache, another dragon-themed game from SpinPlay (Microgaming), features wild stacks and collected dragon tokens for bonus rounds and potential big wins.
